Solo and Ensemble

  • On Saturday, 3/7/20, the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) Music Department will host a Solo & Ensemble Festival for music students from the Tri-Valley Area.   This is the 58th year the Livermore District Music Staff has hosted the event.  The festival will be held at Livermore High School and runs from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, followed by a formal, “Command Performance” at 7:00 pm in the Livermore High School Auditorium.

The purpose of a Solo & Ensemble Festival is to foster a love for “Art” music.  Performance literature will consist of “classical” repertoire. Students may perform as a soloist or as part of an ensemble (duet, trio, etc.).

Approximately 200 Tri-Valley music students participate annually.  Participants must be music students in their district music program.  The festival is divided into three events (instrument families), band, strings, and vocal/piano.

Entrants will have five minutes to perform their selection in front of a clinician.  All clinicians are public school educators known for their expertise as musicians and teachers.  After each performance the soloist/ensemble receives comments and a rating, which rates their performance against a standard for their age group.  Ratings range from “needs improvement” to “superior”.

In addition, some performers that have demonstrated superior musicality may receive a Command Screening.  A command screening is a second opportunity to perform, this time in front of a “screening judge”.  Of these screenings, 12-15 performers will be selected for the formal evening performance in the Livermore High School Auditorium.

The Command Performance represents a cross-section of the district’s music program and will represent a sampling of performers on a variety of instruments, as well as various age levels, from the district music program.

All events and performances, including the evening command performance are open to the public.  Admission is free.

Below are links to an information sheet and for registering.  All registrations are done on-line.  There are two links for registering, one for soloist (with or without an accompanist) and one for ensembles.  Entry fees should be in the form of a check payable to "Mendenhall Music" or cash.  Entry fees should be turned into Mr Divita.
