Safety First! A Message about Bicycle Safety from the Livermore Police Department and LVJUSD

 A Message about Bicycle Safety

The Livermore Police Department and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District would like to welcome back students and parents to the 2019-2020 school year! Now that you’re all settled into your back to school routine, let’s talk bicycle safety!

For many kids, riding their bicycle to school is a rite of passage, offering a sense of freedom and independence. Before you set your child off to school on their own, please make sure they’re educated and prepared. After all, roadway safety is a joint effort among motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

We encourage you to teach your child the rules of the road. It’s very helpful to practice riding the safest bike route to school with your child. If possible, find two bike-friendly routes - one that your student takes most of the time and the second one that could be used as a backup.

Before you let your child bike to school, go over these checks and steps:

  • Make sure your child always wears a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing.
  • Help your child learn and obey all traffic laws.
  • Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and in a single file.
  • Watch for vehicles coming out of or turning into driveways.
  • Stop at corners of sidewalks and streets to look for cars and to make sure the drivers see you before crossing.
  • Walk your bicycle when crossing at a crosswalk.
  • Stay alert and avoid distracted riding.
  • Yield to pedestrians
  • You need your ears to hear traffic and avoid dangerous situations; don’t allow your child to wear a headset when they ride.
  • Make sure your child is riding a bicycle appropriate for their size.
  • Instruct your child not to ride a bicycle when it's dark, foggy or in other low-visibility conditions
