LVJUSD Celebrates Student-Athlete Commitment to College
May 9, 2019 - Livermore, CA - Next fall, 23 members of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) Class of 2019 will be heading to college on athletic scholarships. An invaluable feature of the student experience is the time to devote toward exploring passions, developing the skills and character that lend to the pursuit of excellence in various areas of the students’ lives. One avenue through which this is explored is in athletics. Across the country, students who have worked to distinguish themselves – academically and athletically – proudly sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college, where they commit to continuing their education and pursuing the next level of their chosen sport. 23 student-athletes from Granada and Livermore High schools have taken this significant step.
The NLI is an agreement wherein a prospective student-athlete commits to attending an institution full-time for at least one academic year in exchange for athletics financial aid from the institution. This agreement ensures students’ places in these institutions and promises security, allowing them to focus on a strong finish to their high school career with new and exciting challenges on the horizon.
“Livermore High Athletics is proud of our student athletes and wish them the best of luck going forward,” said LHS Athletic Director James Petersdorf. “The commitment and dedication by the athletes and their parents to LHS is to be commended. We thank them for their four years at LHS.”
LVJUSD is dedicated to providing opportunities for students to cultivate confidence in academics, and encourages students to remain constant learners – through higher education at a four-year university, acquiring a degree or certification in a trade or vocational field, or by finding a fulfilling career. The NLI signings are an inspiring moment for student-athletes as well as their peers, teachers, coaches, and family members. The events represent a validation of a years-long effort practicing discipline and excellence in academics and athletics.
