Extended Student Services (ESS)

ESS at Emma C Smith Elementary

  • The Livermore Area Recreation and Park District school age child care program - Extended Student Services (ESS) was established in June, 1985, under a joint agreement between LARPD and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District.  The program serves ten Livermore elementary schools and was created to provide a safe and caring place for children to be before and after school and during the summer months.

All ESS sites are licensed by Community Care Licensing and comply with Title 22 regulations which establish facility requirements, fire clearance, staffing ratios - 1:14, criminal record clearances, fingerprint clearances, as well as staff education and experience requirements.  The programs receive funding for subsidy care by the Child Development Division of the State Department of Education, Title 5.

Each program provides planned individual and group activities such as art, music, science, cooking, language development, blocks, dramatic play, and outdoor play.  The summer program includes field trips, community service projects, and community visits.

Our programs operate approximately 245 weekdays a year with all sites opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m. Programs close when children are in class and reopen when the kindergartners are released from school.
