Dear East Avenue Middle School Families,
I am thrilled to be joining you as the new principal of East Avenue. My highest goal and responsibility will be to ensure that East Avenue is a great place to work and learn, and a place where you are proud to send your children.
Over the course of my 20 years in education, I was a classroom teacher for twelve years at both the middle and high school level and have been both a middle and high school administrator, most recently serving as an assistant principal at Castro Valley High School. My desire to learn everything possible about school leadership inspired me to return to school to earn my Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at Brandman University. I also deepened my experience in many other ways, serving multiple times as a member of WASC accreditation teams that help California schools review and improve their programs and effectiveness.
If there was a common factor among all of the successful schools I have observed or been a part of, it was that families, students, and staff were connected to their school and the school served as an extension of its community. I want to hear from you and I want you to hear from me about the great things going on at East Avenue. My greatest concerns for the coming year relate to the extra obstacles faced in creating this connection during the current pandemic. We will get through it and we will build those connections! We are just going to have to work a little bit harder to do so.
I also understand that middle school students face some of the toughest issues of identity and belonging. Both of my own children, now heading into 10th grade and 8th grade, went through rough patches in middle school. The teachers and staff who cared for them during these times - engaging them in new ideas, giving them a place to eat lunch when friends were scarce, or simply noticing them with a kind word or compliment - provided invaluable gifts to my family. It is my intention that East Avenue Middle School provide that level of care for your children, too.
I am extremely eager to get to work and to get the 2020-21 school year off to a great start. A big part of that will be hearing from you and giving you a chance to get to know me and the enthusiasm and experience I will bring to East Avenue. When I return from a family trip at the end of July, one of my first priorities will be to share ways in which you can be in contact with me.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
