• Reading

I am thrilled to have you in my class this year!  My goal is to support you in  having a very successful year.  Below I have included my course syllabus which includes class expectations and my grading scale.  Core class covers three periods including Reading, English, and Social Studies.  For English Language Arts (ELA) we will use the StudySync curriculum.  You will have reading homework every week to practice the reading skills taught in class.  The majority of the reading will be done online in class.  Our novel studies this year include Hatchet, Freedom Walkers, Roll of Thunder..., The Lightning Thief, and Tuck Everlasting. You will also read many different genres, as you learn to master the Common Core State Standards for 6th grade reading.  During Social Distance or Virtual Learning, you will use the schedule provided by the district.  All our assignments can be found on Schoology, our district's new digital platform for assignments, grades, communication, etc.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at Lvalenzuela@lvjusd.org.

    Rewards for good choices:

I will use a point system for students to choose the rewards they want including, but not limited to: Free Homework Pass, PJ Day, Class Party, Music Choice, Class Helper, Choose Teacher’s Hairstyle, Virtual Field Trip, etc.

    Consequences for poor choices:

Verbal Warning, Contact Home, Intervention Meeting with Principal/Vice Principal

    Grading Policy

I want to give my students as many opportunities as possible to show mastery.  I will accept late work up until two weeks before the end of the trimester.  However, I will lower the grade for the assignment by 5% for each day it is late, up to 50%.  Students who are absent will be given the same amount of time they are absent to turn their work in (i.e. absent two days, students have two extra days to get their work in).  I will allow test retakes as long as all work up to that point has been completed and turned in.  I only allow test retakes for scores of 69% or below.

Academic Excellence & Dishonesty: Personal academic excellence is the expectation in class.  It is expected that you will do your personal best and ask for help when needed.  There will be consequences for academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating, etc.).  Consequences may include (but are not limited to) receiving a zero, contacting home, and contacting the Principal/Vice Principal.
