Extreme Heat Protocols

School Site Modifications for Extreme Heat
Extreme heat conditions can impact our area throughout the school year. We have protocols in place to modify outdoor activities for students during extreme heat conditions in the interest of student safety. These protocols align with general extreme heat recommendations put forth by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) policies for athletics.
When temperatures are >90°, staff may make modifications to the types of outdoor physical activity our students are engaged in. The duration and intensity of their physical activities are evaluated, and additional breaks and hydration are encouraged.
When temperatures are >100°, outdoor PE instruction and play during recess and lunch will transition to indoors. Indoor physical activities may also be modified based on the temperature of indoor gymnasiums and the availability of fans and air conditioning. The timing of athletic practices and competitions, especially for sports using outdoor fields and facilities, may be altered, changed, or canceled if temperatures rise above 100°.
Suggestions for mitigating high heat conditions while at school include:
-
Wearing appropriate lightweight, loose-fitted clothing
-
Applying sunscreen and/or wearing sun protection
-
Hydrating regularly: Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle with them to school each day. All of our campuses include hydration stations that accommodate water bottles.
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Extreme Heat Guidance
The CDPH website includes the CDC's Heat Risk Dashboard which allows you to view the heat risk forecast based on your zip code. The Heat Risk Dashboard aligns with CDPH's Heat Risk Grid (see below) which uses a four-point scale to categorize our heat forecast from minor to extreme.
California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Extreme Heat & Air Quality Policy - For CIF Sports
CIF policies regarding extreme heat and air quality for CIF sports can be viewed on their website. They are also included in our LVJUSD Athletics Handbook which is available on both our Granada High athletics website and Livermore High athletics website.
