    The Importance of Self-Care

    Over the last 6 months, we’ve been experiencing secondary losses e.g., loss of familiar routines, social connectedness, sports, hobbies, celebrations, vacations, travel, etc. Many of us are feeling more anxious, sad, fearful, irritable, etc. than usual. With a sudden loss, these feelings can intensify. When someone dies it can also bring up intense emotions related to previous experiences. These feelings can include despair, emptiness, regret, guilt, and abandonment.  

    Common initial reactions to grief and loss include denial, disbelief, feeling numb emotionally, difficulty sleeping, trouble concentrating, difficulty making decisions and being productive, changes in eating patterns, and an increase in alcohol or substance use. Loss is an inevitable part of life and it’s important to allow ourselves time to grieve.

    If you haven’t done so already, we encourage you to develop a self-care plan. California’s Surgeon General, Nadine Burke Harris, MD recommends we incorporate the following healthy practices into our lives: Supportive Relationships, Quality Sleep, Physical Activity, Mindfulness Practices, Balanced Nutrition, and Mental Health Care.
